Mission
Many students perceive mathematics to be one of the most difficult subjects in school,
and they believe that its mastery requires special or exceptional intelligence.
In actuality, this is really not the case.
We all learn through the use of our senses. For most school subjects,
using written and verbal expression is the most common teaching method. However,
because of its abstract nature, understanding mathematical concepts requires more than
just the use of verbal and written expression.
Over the centuries, mathematicians have created
many special symbols and formulae to better communicate these abstract concepts. These
mathematical symbols and formulae have become accepted because of their logical precision.
However, while this precision is essential to the mastery of mathematical concepts,
its abstract nature makes it difficult to understand through the use of
verbal and written language alone.
Most mathematics textbooks and classroom instruction methods rely heavily on verbal
language to explain the meanings of abstract symbols and formulae.
This reliance on verbal language makes learning more difficult.
The use of visualization makes learning much easier.
Great poetry can "paint" wonderful mental images,
but those mental images vary with each reader.
The use of a vivid image in teaching abstract mathematical concepts, however,
can help simplify and clarify the concept.
The rote memorization of addition and subtraction facts,
times tables and formulae helps students in the process of solving problems,
but does little to help students understand the concept behind the process.
Visualization significantly enhances the learning process.
It is unfortunate that traditional instruction in mathematics relies far too much on
memorization and verbal instruction while using far too little visual imagery.
Traditional techniques vary, and are different for everyone.
However, the rapid advancement of the technology
and use of the computer has provided us with the
ideal tool to bring visualization into mathematics teaching.
This program is designed to provide parents and classroom teachers with the means to
better employ visual imagery. Its simple design can aid in communicating the material.
It is designed as a supplementary resource to help
students in their mastery of mathematics. It is also designed to help parents to better
understand mathematical concepts as they work to assist their children in home learning.
