In some situations, a simple whole-number approximation may be all that is required. Finer precision will not always be necessary. For example, we are all used to everyday whole-number approximations of temperatures, prices, heights, weights, and other measurements. If a whole-number approximation is all that we require for a fraction, we need go no further. On the other hand, for situations that do require more precision, we will use the decimal method. With the whole-number decimal system that you already know, the digit on the right-most side is called the “one’s position.” Each digit to its left stands for a number that is a multiple of 10. Each position then corresponds to 10 times the one on its right.
