In this section, we will uncover an alternate method of representing fractions that does not require two separate integers. We will find that it is both possible and convenient to show fractions as single numbers whose values are visually clear. Our gain in convenience, unfortunately, will come with a loss of some mathematical precision. The method that we will be using is a form called “decimal numbers.” From the beginning, you have been totally used to seeing and writing whole numbers in decimal form. You have also seen how whole numbers can be shown as equally-spaced points on a number line.
