We continue this same pattern to find each successive digit. Each digit corresponds to 1/10 the value of the previous position, and we find its value from the remainder left over from the prior division. We multiply the remainder by 10, and divide again to obtain a new quotient and remainder. The quotient gives us the digit value for the next position. You may be surprised to see that this direct method gives us the same digits that were produced earlier by performing a subtraction of two fractions. The direct division method is actually a shortcut that is simpler, but slightly less intuitive. With the counters below, you may select a numerator and denominator for a fraction and see how this procedure is able to convert it to decimal form.
