In the purest mathematical sense, the two-integer, numerator/denominator form is all that we need to identify any possible rational number. Unfortunately, while this form is mathematically pure and simple, it is often not very convenient. To begin with, it can be awkward to handle numbers this way, especially in print and with calculators. The problem gets worse as the numerators and denominators get very large. Even if the fractions are shown explicitly, their real numeric value may appear obscure, especially if the numerators and denominators are very large. The examples below show pairs of fractions whose values are very nearly equal, but their near-equality would not be obvious or even apparent from looking at them casually.
