If one decimal digit is all the precision we need, we are done. If not, we continue by finding the value for the second digit. This will be the 1/100 position. The number that will appear there will be the numerator of a fraction whose denominator is 100, so its value will be between 0 and 9/100. How is this going to help us? To see how this second, 1/100 digit fits into the picture, we need to understand that the original fraction 1/4 that we are trying to show can be broken up into a sum of smaller fractions. We already know that a whole number like 25 can be shown as such a sum like 20 plus 5. That is indeed what the two digits 2 and 5 in the ten’s and one’s positions mean in the decimal system. With the fraction 1/4, we have already found the first digit, which corresponds to 2/10. The rational number 1/4 is equal to the sum of the fraction 2/10 that we already have and another fraction that we want to find. To determine this leftover, or “remainder” fraction, we perform a subtraction. The fraction we want is the difference 1/4 – 2/10. Performing the fraction arithmetic that you have already mastered gives us the remainder, 5/100.
