In order to identify the natural numbers, we give them symbols that we call “numerals.” A numeral is not the same thing as the number itself, but it is just a name for the number. The numerals that are most familiar to us are the arabic symbols 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, … Another group of symbols that we often see are the Roman Numerals that start with I, II, III, IV, V, … Like the arabic symbols, the Roman Numerals are just different names for the number and are not the same as the actual numbers. The numeral III, for example, is different from the numeral 3, but both stand for the number three.
