From what you know about counting, what is the very first, or lowest of the counting numbers? You could begin counting with any any number you wish, but with the natural numbers, we say that the first number is always 1. This will mean that the number 1 is always the lowest natural number, or the lowest member of the natural number system. In mathematical language, we also call the number 1 the lower bound, which means that it cannot have any lower members. There is no highest natural number. This will mean that the natural numbers have no highest member or upper bound.
