We see that the natural numbers come strictly in order of their size – for any two natural numbers, one always comes before or after the other. We cannot have two natural numbers that are both separate and equal. Because of this then, whenever we arrange the numbers in a diagram, the diagram will always form a single chain, and the chain may have no forks or branches.
