Another important property of natural numbers is that between any natural number and its successor there can be no other natural number. To see why this is important, let us imagine two strings of beads that are arranged on a line like natural numbers, but are strung together differently. In this arrangement, the successor of bead #1 is bead #2, and the successor of bead #1+ is bead #2+. The successor of #2 is #3, and the successor of #2+ is #3+. Each bead has one successor, but you can see that between avery bead and its own successor there is another bead from the other chain.
