The number that follows any natural number is called its successor. The term “successor” is one you will need to remember and keep in your math vocabulary. The successor of 1 is 2. The successor of 2 is 3, and the successor of 3 is 4. It is possible to describe number systems whose numbers do not have just one successor, and we will learn more about them later. For now, the most important thing to remember about natural numbers is that every one of them has exactly one and no more than one successor.
