To begin with, let us look at a very simple example of two equations with two unknown variables, x and y. The graph below shows the familiar relations y = x, and x = -y; It is easy to see that the graphs for these two equations intersect at the origin, (0, 0). We can also easily see from the equations that 0 is the only value for x or y that can apply to both relations at the same time. The values x = 0 and y = 0 are thus the unique solution.
