In the previous lesson, you became familiar with rules of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, and how to apply them to simplify and solve some simple algebraic equations. The substitution rule that you have just learned is one more useful tool to enlarge your mathematical powers. The examples presented here showed pairs of simultaneous linear equations that have two variables. The substitution rule can also be used to solve larger, more complex systems of simultaneous equations, as you will learn in your future study.
