In the equations below, you can see that the expression on the left side of the second equation is subtracted from the left side of the first equation. At the same time, the constant on the right side of the second equation is subtracted from the right side of the first. Performing this subtraction on both sides gives us the result that the y from the second equation is subtracted from the y in the first. This subtraction causes the y to be cancelled, and leaves only x as a remaining variable. We are thus left with an equation whose value for x we can quickly calculate, and also use to determine the value of y.
