For pairs of equations like this, it is not difficult to draw graphs to find their solutions by looking for the points of intersection. The graphs by themselves may not be convenient, and will not necessarily provide answers with the precision one may require. Let us set aside the graphs for a moment, and see how we may find solutions using the rules of algebra that we already know. With the rule of substution, we can begin by combining the two equations into one that has a single variable. The general result from this substitution will appear as y = -y + b + a;
